The Song That Changed My Life

About 3 or 4 years ago on a cool and breezy monsoon day here in Mumbai, I was busy searching the internet for some new songs. I was sitting on my balcony, the dark monsoon sea stretching out in the front, and the distant lights of the Mumbai ships and the city forming small glittering dots all around.

Most of the English and Hindi tracks were already known, so I typed in ‘Bengali’ in the keyword for the search.

As I sat there in the quiet and soulful hours much past midnight, I saw a track that I had not yet heard of, but one that came popping up in all my searches.

I tried using a few different words, but the same song was popping up everywhere. Just the fact that it was mentioned everywhere and came up in every search I did was enough reason for me to give it an ear.

Before this, I don’t remember the last Bengali song I had heard, or enjoyed, or learnt enough to sing along. I don’t remember any song actually. Maybe one or two that I had heard sometime when I visited Calcutta as a kid, but even then, there were no Bengali songs that I could say I knew or could sing.

I clicked on the song. The video had a very sepia feel to it. And these frames are of course a pull for me. So I was glued on instantly. As the music began, I could feel a stirring, I could feel a pull. There was something magical happening here, something different.

Anupam Roy's 'Urey Jaak' from The Album 'Doorbine Chokh Raakhbo Na' Lyrics In English Script

The song is called 'Urey Jaak', roughly meaning 'let it fly away' and was originally written in September 2007. This appeared in Anupam Roy's 2012 album 'Doorbine Chokh Raakhbo Na.'

Though I'm not sure if this is as popular as the other ones, I really quite like the lyrics, they speak to me, they connect to me, I can make my own meaning out of them, while flowing in tune with the song.....

So for those of you who understand the Bengali script, or haven't been able to sing along to this one, here are the lyrics for you in English script to help you understand better.

Anupam Roy's 'Tistaan 2' Lyrics In English Script

I absolutely love this song....Extremely different from the 'typical' kind of music that's brand Anupam Roy. And the fact that it echoes so many experiences and feelings that seem to have been taken out of a page from my diary.....huh...if only I could've...isn't it?

So here are the lyrics of the song 'Tistaan 2' that was penned by Anupam Roy in April 2005.It's part of Anupam Roy's first album Doorbine Chokh Raakhbo Na that released in 2012.

Anupam Roy Music Online Purchase

I've been trying to get my hands on Anupam Roy's solo album for a long long time now. I can't even begin to tell you how much I've actually traveled and looked around for it. Since I live in Mumbai, I haven't got it in any of the stores here, at least not the ones I checked at, and I did check out a lot of places and most of the famous music stores! Bad luck...
